Telling the Time in Spanish

Telling the time in Spanish can be a little confusing at first until you realise the basic fundamentals.

If you wanted to ask the time in Spanish you would say “What time is it” however the time would be the hour the word for hour in Spanish is HORA so what time is it in Spanish would be QUÉ HORA ES? But what you would really be saying is “What hour is”

To answer the question it is one o clock would be ES LA UNA which translates as “it is the one” although you don’t state the hour you will be understood

Telling the Time in Spanish

Here are some examples of the time on the hour

It is one o clock = ES LA UNA

Important to take note the only time to use ES LA is only on the one because it is singular all the rest are plural.

It is 2 o clock = SON LAS DOS

It is 3 o clock = SON LAS TRES

It is 4 o clock = SON LAS CUARTO

It is 5 o clock = SON LAS CINCO

Very often you will see the words EN PUNTO which means on the dot. If you wanted to say

It is 6 o clock on the dot = SON LAS SEIS EN PUNTO

It is 7 o clock on the dot = SON LAS SIETE EN PUNTO

If you want to say the time is quarter past two in Spanish that would be SON LAS DOS Y CUARTO

Quarter past three = SON LAS TRES Y CUARTO

Quarter past four = SON LAS CUATRO

Quarter past five = SON LAS CINCO Y CUARTO

Quarter past seven = SON LAS SIETE Y CUARTO

If you want to say the time is half past the hour the word in Spanish for half is MEDIA

Half past one = ES LA UNA Y MEDIA

Half past two = SON LAS DOS Y MEDIA

Half past three = SON LAS TRES Y MEDIA

If you want to say the time is quarter to one

ES LA UNA MENOS CUARTO

The word MENOS means less

It is quarter to two = SON LAS DOS MENOS CUARTO

It is quarter to three = SON LAS TRES MENOS CUARTO

It is quarter to four = SON LAS CUATRO MENOS CUARTO

Its is quarter to five = SON LAS CINCO MENOS CUARTO
