Some considerable time ago being a well travelled person I was lucky enough to experience a months trip to Spain, I speak a little Spanish not fluent by any means but, enough to get by.
I started in the north and journeyed around the coast of Spain heading south, the first place I stopped off was around the Pyrenees area, this is where I discovered the different interpretations of the Spanish language.
It really was quite amusing for them when I attempted to communicate with them, and the reason is in the north of Spain they speak a mixture of Spanish, and French, which is described as Catalan.
Previous to this trip I felt pretty confident with regard to my use of the language, however, this was reduced quite considerably very quickly, and soon realised they did not understand a certain words and phrases.
The puzzled looks on their faces really made me smile and they also after a while saw the funny side, that’s the great thing about learning Spanish in Spain they are very helpful when they see you making a attempt, plus in general a warm and friendly nation.
However, it was a great lesson to learn, that in order to learn any language you have to sometimes step out of your comfort zone and be prepared to jump in at the deep end.
